New to Practice Fellowship

What is the New to Practice Fellowship?

• National NHSE scheme for GPs within two years of CCT
• Available to all GPs in a substantive post (salaried, partnership, retainer)
• Funding for protected self-development time of up to one session per week reimbursed monthly via your practice (pro-rata rate)
• Offer of local support, facilitated employment discussions and induction materials for starting work
• Monthly CPD programme on relevant topics to ease your path from training into independent practice
• Builds peer support and connections with local networks
• Coaching and mentoring opportunities
• Chance to learn new skills in important areas such as quality improvement, practice management, remote working
• Opportunity to start or develop your portfolio career

NHS England funding for this national scheme will fund all those eligible starting before 31 March 2024 for the duration of the two year fellowship. From 1 April 2024, NHS England will no longer be funding the New to Practice Fellowship. There are plans for NHS England to pass funding to local systems and the Phoenix Programme are excited to work with local organisations to develop new workforce schemes for early career GPs.

The Phoenix Programme has been offering support to newly qualified GPs in Nottinghamshire since August 2019. We officially launched our New to Practice Fellowship Scheme in February 2021. We currently have over 70 New to Practice GP fellows and our numbers are growing.
