Mental Health: Do you need help urgently?

If you don’t feel able to keep yourself safe right now, talk to someone. NHS Practitioner Health provides 24-hour text support. Text NHSPH to 85258. You can also ask for an emergency appointment with your GP, call 111 or go to ED if you feel you may act on your suicidal thoughts or have self-harmed and need urgent medical attention.

  • You can call the Samaritans anonymously on 116 123 or email jo@samaritans.org 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for free.
  • The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is dedicated to preventing male suicide, the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK. Men can contact them from 5pm-12midnight, 365 days a year. The charity has said: “Our helpline is for men in the UK who are down or have hit a wall for any reason, who need to talk or find information and support.” You can call them on 0800 58 58 58. Webchat is also available and there are useful resources on the website.
  • Mind UK has a very useful urgent help tool that includes practical tips if you are feeling overwhelmed and out of control. It also offers an excellent section on managing suicidal feelings.
  • Feeling overwhelmed? This resource from the Royal College of Psychiatrists includes a safety plan which can be downloaded.
  • Stay Alive: This app is a pocket suicide prevention resource for the UK, packed full of useful information and tools to help you stay safe in crisis. You can use it if you are having thoughts of suicide or if you are concerned about someone else who may be considering suicide.
